What does a reflexology treatment involve?

Pressure is applied to the feet and hands using specific thumb, finger and hand techniques. Stretch and movement techniques are utilized as “desserts” to provide relaxation to the foot. Oil, cream and lotions are not utilised in traditional reflexology work although aromatherapy can be applied in conjunction with reflexology by a trained practitioner.

Reflexology sessions in general last from between 30 minutes to an hour. The client sits in a reclining chair placing the feet conveniently for the reflexologist’s work.

Reflexologists use pressure, stretch and movement to work through the foot methodically. Technique is applied to the whole foot.

A reflexology treatment should NEVER be painful. The reflexologist should work within your comfort zone. Too much pressure can actually be harmful and could lead to injury. Communication is essential during a reflexology treatment. You must always tell your reflexologist if areas of the foot are sore or tender whilst a treatment is in progress. This will give the reflexologist an idea of the areas of your body that need more work and will give them an overall picture of any future treatments that may be needed.

Do not rely on a reflexologist for medical help. The reflexologist is limited to complementing medicine not replacing it.

You should feel relaxation at the end of a session. How long that relaxation lasts is a good indicator of the effectiveness of the session. Make note of this and tell your reflexologist your response to the session at the next session. This can be helpful information.

Finally, enjoy the session.

Be careful that talking doesn’t interfere with the relaxation effect. Discussing world politics is probably something best left to another time.

Remember that reflexology can be applied to both the feet and hands.

If you have an infectious foot condition, your reflexologist may suggest a hand treatment as an alternative or they may use gloves for the treatment. Some people prefer treatment to the hand rather than the foot. If you don’t like your feet being touched, or they are extra sensitive, then a treatment to the hand may be a good alternative.
